Field marshal (Pakistan)

Field marshal (Pakistan);

Field marshal (Pakistan)

Field marshal (FM) is the highest title in the Pakistan Army given by the Pakistani government to Pakistan Army officers in recognition of exceptional service. Though it is a modern and legal rank with a pay grade of "Apex Scale," it has been given only twice in its entire history, and the two field marshals who have received the rank are Ayub Khan and Asim Munir, who were promoted in 1959 and 2025, respectively. It is an honorary rank and entails no extra powers and pay grade. It is equivalent to Marshal of the Air Force in the Pakistan Air Force and Admiral of the Fleet in the Pakistan Navy, and although it is a normally senior rank in Pakistan army, it can be addressed as five-star general "standard rank scale" to differentiate it from other military insignia.

History;

After the independence of Pakistan since 1947, the rank of Field Marshal has been conferred upon Pakistan's army chiefs only twice — for the first time, to Ayub Khan.

The second time was in May 2025, when Asim Munir, Chief of the Army Staff, was elevated to the rank of Field Marshal

Appointment;

The field marshal appointment is done by an appeal filed for review request by the Prime Minister of Pakistan along with the President and Defence Ministry to the Supreme Court or high court for constitutional orders under specific rules and regulations, though the president has the power of the commander-in-chief and prime minister chairs the National Assembly

Notes

 Ayub retired from active service in 1958; however, he was promoted to field marshal in 1959. See "Special report: The Changing of the Guard 1958–1969", Dawn, 2 September 2017:

Dawn October 27, 1959 (News Report)

President Ayub conferred Field Marshal rank on General Mohammad Ayub Khan

The presidential cabinet conferred the Field Marshal rank on General Mohammad Ayub Khan. The statement declared that the awarding of this rank will be to show the world in modest fashion how much his people revere him and how thankful the country is to its saviour. The Field Marshal rank is the highest rank of armies founded on the patronage of the British Army. The press release further stated that through a peaceful revolution last year the President had not only defended Pakistan's territorial integrity but also saved the nation itself.
