Passengers Shocked as Pilot Evades Midair Crash with B-52 Bomber
Passengers shocked as pilot evades midair crash with B-52 bomber
A pilot is being praised for his
agility and resourcefulness after a dramatic near-miss in the air. The
Minneapolis-St. Paul to Minot International Airport Embraer E175 plane was
headed when it suddenly came face-to-face with a B-52 Stratofortress from Minot
Air Force Base.
The SkyWest Airlines pilot
executed a forceful sequence of theatrical midair turns to prevent crashing
into the military plane, which flew so closely that it could be easily viewed
from the right side of the aircraft.
An eyewitness report
"All of the sudden we just
jerk violently to the right — we just kept making more and more turns, and he
gets on the announcement and says, 'I'm sorry everyone, I'll tell you
everything once we've landed safely.'
The pilot speaks
The pilot apologized to the
passengers later and said:
"Since his speed. I have no idea how fast they were moving, but they moved much faster than we did. I figured it was the best thing to do to make the turn behind it. Sorry about the hard maneuver; I was caught off guard. Not usual at all. I have no idea why they didn't warn us, since the Air Force base does have radar. short version is, it was not enjoyable, but I do apologize and appreciate your understanding. Not a not a fun day on the job."
The Air Force is investigating
"We are familiar with the recent press accounts of commercial and Air Force aircraft flying in space near Minot International Airport. We are looking into the issue now. We can verify that a B-52 aircraft based at Minot AFB did fly over the North Dakota State Fair Friday night."
Delta released a statement
Delta Airlines, operating Sky
West, released the following statement following the incident:
"SkyWest 3788, Delta Connection from Minneapolis, Minnesota to Minot, North Dakota, landed safely in Minot after being cleared to the approach by tower but did a go-around when they saw another aircraft in their line of flight. We're investigating the incident."
